Niall O Brien bats found with Indian team

Ireland wicketkeeper Niall O’Brien is relieved that he will finally get to play with his own bats after they were found with the luggage of the Indian team in the Capital. Niall, however, will have to wait for a few more days to lay his hands on six bats that had gone missing during the team’s clash against India in Bangalore.

Ireland team media manager Barry Chambers told us that the liaison officer of the Indian team called up to inform that Niall’s kit bag was discovered in Delhi but will be transported directly to Kolkata, where the Irish team play their next match against South Africa.

“ It was great that he will finally get his bats back after they went missing with the kit bag. The bag was moved with the luggage of the Indian team and it was only when they noticed that there was one extra kit with the luggage of the Indian team that they informed us,” Chambers said.

“ But for this match (against the West Indies) he will have to do with the two bats that he had ordered from the Gray- Nicolls factory.” Meanwhile, the Irish players are annoyed with reports suggesting that the team has been cooking up false stories during the World Cup and that the episode of Niall’s lost bats was part of them.

“ The players are a little disappointed that there have been reports which claim that all these stories are being cooked up and have no truth,” Chambers said.

The reports suggested that Niall came out with the story on the missing bats just to avoid any penalty from the International Cricket Council for damaging a door at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.

Cricket Ireland had to shell out €310 ( Rs. 2,300) as damages to the local cricket association as they preferred not to push the matter further. “ To enable Niall to claim compensation from his insurance company, we reported the matter to the local police station. This was done to secure a police incident number, without which the insurance company will not entertain his claim,” Chambers said.
